Eigg Receives 24-Hour Power
Econnect has played a major role in delivering 24-hour power to a remote Scottish island.
Specialist electrical engineers have carried out the initial system design for the island of Eigg, which was energised earlier this week.
As well as being able to use electricity 24-hours a day, many inhabitants are now able to start using electric washing machines and other domestic appliances for the first time without fear of overloading the island’s old diesel generator.
With the assistance of £1.6m of European and Council funding, Eigg’s electricity will now be clean, green and around the clock - making considerable savings on fossil fuel guzzling diesel.
3 turbines will take advantage of the 40-50mph winds, whilst the island’s undulating terrain allows additional power to be generated by a local hydro scheme.
Econnect played a pivotal role in providing the outline design and budget costs which allowed Eigg Electric to seek the necessary funding to proceed with detailed design and implementation.
The subsequent detailed design of the power system devised by Econnect will act as a blueprint for other island systems around the world.
Econnect’s design enabled the integration of the existing hydro generation to the island grid incorporating PV, battery / inverter storage and diesel. The work also included a detailed layout and construction plan for the proposed wind farm, control system and metering.
Econnect’s portfolio of island systems includes the Scottish islands of Rum and Foula, St Helena, Falkland Islands and the Greek island of Kythnos.
