A Very Feasible $2 Billion AUD
Epuron, a subsidiary of German renewable energy group Conenergy AG has announced plans to install one of the largest wind farms in the world.
Once operating the Silverton Wind Farm will have the potential for almost 1,000 megawatts of renewable energy and generate enough electricity for 400,000 homes. With installation of 500 wind turbines, the $2billion AUD proposed project would double the number of turbines operating in Australia.
Econnect was commissioned by Epuron in August this year to establish a number of feasible connection options and evaluate different design options to transmit the wind farm output from the site to the major load centres (i.e. AC versus DC, 220kV versus 500kV).
In the preliminary report, Econnect identified possible grid connection technical issues that Epuron will need to consider before the project progresses to the next phase.
The announcement follows from the news last month that the Federal Government would set a national mandatory clean energy target of 30,000 gigawatt hours of electricity a year by 2020.
The proposed Wind Farm will be built on the ranges that rise around the Mundi Mundi plains, north-west of Broken Hill in NSW by the end of 2009.
