E.ON Sets the Pace with GridConnection

One of the UK’s leading energy suppliers, E.ON, has signed up to the new online feasibility tool, GridConnection.co.uk, which could see them increase the pace of their renewable energy development.

Given the increased activity in the renewables market, green energy developers are putting pressure on consultants to turn around initial grid connection studies in shorter and shorter timeframes. GridConnection.co.uk allows developers to investigate UK site feasibility for renewables in a matter of minutes via the internet.

E.ON first invested in wind energy in 1991 and is currently building Robin Rigg in the Solway Firth – set to be one of the largest offshore windfarms in Europe. The company now has 19 onshore wind farms throughout the UK, with a significant number of sites in various stages of development.

The contract with GridConnection will allow the energy supplier to assess further potential sites within minutes and at a fraction of the cost.

Simon Eddleston, Development Manager from E.ON said: “GridConnection fits well with our strategy to develop renewable energy and allows us to assess the connection alternatives for unlimited UK sites using in-house personnel.

“A grid connection can often be the difference between a commercially viable or non-viable project. Quickly determining the initial feasibility of projects saves us spending time on those that may never get off the ground. The launch of GridConnection is a key move in our industry, and brings together extremely valuable network data under one roof.”

GridConnection was developed as a joint undertaking between GIS-experts Imass and Econnect Ventures, and is the first on-line service to be managed by the new Web Renewables subsidiary of Econnect.

Econnect’s Web Business Manager Colin Matheson is delighted to welcome E.ON as a  client. Colin said:

“The fact that a major organisation such as E.ON is utilising GridConnection to develop renewables is exciting news - and it  adds weight to the importance of developing practical  new technology solutions that enable the further integration of distributed generation.”

“We launched the product earlier this year and already we are seeing heavy demand from developers as the pace for connecting renewables quickens”.
