Mullananalt Energised

Airtricity’s wind turbines at Mullananalt in the Republic of Ireland are undergoing the final stages of commissioning.

All five of the 1.5 MW GE machines are now operational and generating electricity into the Irish grid.

Econnect Construction made the final connection on behalf of their client, Graham Civil Contractors, having commenced construction just 10 months ago.

The construction firm’s work on the site included the design and build of the 38kV substation and the 20kV cabling between the turbines and the unit transformers.

Econnect was also able to utilise the services of its consultancy arm, with a team led by turbine specialist Sigrid Bolik.

Sigrid and her team assisted with the final system design, earthing design and grid code compliance work, as well as power quality studies.

Econnect Construction’s Project Manager for Mullananalt, Neil Mattinson was delighted to have all five sets of blades turning in such a tight timescale. He said:

“This was a great opportunity for us to utilise skills from across the Econnect group. For our client, it also meant that we were able to provide one point of contact for consultancy and construction work which can speed up the results.

“It’s a superb feeling to see all blades turning after the hard work that everyone has put in. We’ve had wind speeds in the region of 60-70mph in recent days and the turbines have been getting great value from this.”

Mullananalt is the third site that Econnect has seen energised this year already. The company is expected to announce further commissioning on sites around the UK and Ireland in the next few weeks.
