Kisiizi Hospital

Project Title:

Load Controlling for Hydro System

Energy Type:

Hydro

Client:

DTI, UK

Location:

Kisiizi, Uganda

Project Size:

70kW

Project Scope:

With the help of part funding from the UK's Department of Trade and Industry, Econnect helped to prevent power cuts to essential loads at Kisiizi Hospital in South West Uganda.

Situated 30km away from the Ugandan National Grid, the hospital has been dependent on a stand-alone hydro scheme for its electricity supply since it was built in 1958.

Inevitably, electricity demand has risen as the hospital has grown, resulting in frequent blackouts which occur when demand exceeds supply.

Key Achievements:

Using Econnect's innovative Distributed Intelligent Load Controllers (DILCs), we have prioritised essential loads. In this way non-essential loads are shed when demand is approaching blackout levels to prevent power being lost from high priority areas, such as the operating theatres.

There have been no blackouts since the installation of the DILCs.

Feedback has included:

I no longer know where my candles and matches are!"

"Previously, operating in pitch darkness increased the hazards slightly for the patient!"
